A COLLECTIVE PERFORMANCE-BASED CONTRACT FOR POINT-NONPOINT SOURCE POLLUTION TRADING AgEcon
Taylor, Michael A.; Randall, Alan; Sohngen, Brent.
Collective performance-based trading can be achieved by pairing a team contract with an auction to determine team membership. The auction effectively overcomes adverse selection, and the team contract reduces the incentive to "free-ride" associated with moral hazard in teams.

A COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF ORGANIC PRODUCE CONSUMERS IN NEW JERSEY TO NEW YORK AND PENNSYLVANIA AgEcon
Shuzzler, Alice; Govindasamy, Ramu; Adelaja, Adesoji O..
This comparative study seeks to distinguish the organic consumers of New Jersey from those of New York and Pennsylvania. The objective of the study is to document the characteristics of New Jersey organic produce consumers and compare the profile to New York and Pennsylvania consumers. Econometric methods will be used to model behavior and characteristics of consumers who frequently buy organic produce, and of consumers who are willing to pay 10 percent or more extra for organic produce than for conventional produce. Comparing models for New Jersey to those for New York and Pennsylvania will provide a framework for determining the significant characteristics unique to New Jersey's organic produce consumers.

A COMPARISON OF CHEAP TALK AND ALTERNATIVE CERTAINTY CALIBRATION TECHNIQUES IN CONTINGENT VALUATION AgEcon
Samnaliev, Mihail; Stevens, Thomas H.; More, Thomas.
A field test of cheap talk and two types of certainty calibration in contingent valuation of public lands indicated that cheap talk does not reduce WTP estimates. Use of a ten point certainty calibration scale reduces WTP estimates by about half. However, adjusting for uncertainty using a 'Not Sure' option does not reduce WTP estimates but increases the variance in responses. There may be a conceptual difference between these two ways of accounting for respondents' uncertainty, which may suggest why they provide different WTP value estimates and variances.

A Comparison of U. S. and Canadian Consumers' Willingness to Pay for Red-Meat Traceability AgEcon
Dickinson, David L.; Hobbs, Jill E.; Bailey, DeeVon.
Auction experiments at locations in the US and Canada are used to determine consumers' willingness to pay for red-meat traceability and other enhanced food characteristics. Consumers in both countries are found to be willing to pay a positive amount for traceability, but would pay even more if traceability were bundled with other characteristics such as animal welfare or enhanced food safety. The results suggest a larger Canadian market for traceability, on a percentage basis, for beef than in the US.

A COST-BASED MODEL OF SEASONAL PRODUCTION, WITH APPLICATION TO MILK POLICY AgEcon
Hennessy, David A.; Roosen, Jutta.
Milk production is seasonal in many European countries. While quantity seasonality poses capacity management problems for dairy processors, a European Union policy goal is to reduce price seasonality. After developing a model of endogenous seasonality, we study the effects of three E.U. policies on production decisions. These are private storage subsidies, production removals, and production quotas. When cost functions are seasonal in a specified way, then arbitrage opportunities interact with storage subsidies to reduce both price and consumption seasonality. But production seasonality likely increases because storage subsidies promote temporal market integration. Conditions are identified under which product market interventions increase quantity...

A Critique of the Use of the Balanced Scorecard in Multi-Enterprise Family Farm Businesses AgEcon
Shadbolt, Nicola M.; Beeby, N.; Brier, B.; Gardner, John W.G..
Business strategy is very important to small and medium family businesses as many are both fragile and vulnerable; strategy provides a solid foundation for survival. Various studies have identified that businesses that engage in strategic management outperform those that do not. Despite this knowledge the uptake of many aspects of strategic management by farm businesses has been slow. Although the development of business plans is now common there is often a disconnect between monitoring and strategy. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) was applied to case study farms during both the planning process and as they implemented and controlled their strategic choices to determine areas of difference that restrict or enhance it as a management tool for both family and...

A Cross Country Comparison of the Development of the Organic Sector in Denmark, Germany, United Kingdom and the Netherlands AgEcon
Goddijn, Silvia T.; Meeusen, Marieke J.G..
The aim of this article is to test the thesis "commitment of retail chains as well as favourable policy conditions are the main drivers of the steady market growth of organic agriculture in Europe." (Yussefi and Willer, 2003). Therefore, the role of government policy and of retail chains in four European countries -– Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands - are analysed. It seems that the collaboration between government, chain participants and NGOs is of considerable importance, in which active stimulation and the provision of guidance to the channel from the retail chains, in combination with an active and stimulating government policy, can cause an impulse in growth. It should be noted that other factors must also be present in order...
